We caught up with Dr. Heather Dehn, DC, a member of the ChiroPreferred advisory board, to learn how she stays passionate in her practice.

“I love the relationships I build with patients. I see them frequently, and when I help them, especially if they were not sure that I could, I build trust. Patients ask about all kinds of health issues and trust that you will give them the best advice.”

“You hear them talk about their families and their lives. You get to share in their accomplishments and their lifetime milestones. Many times, we even treat multiple generations in the same family. I really see it as an honor to be a part of their lives, and I think this is my favorite part about working with patients.”

“I take lots of time off. Some of the time I take off is for vacation, and I am 100% unplugged. I arrange to have another chiropractor on call for emergencies. Sometimes, I travel for conferences which recharges my battery in a different way.”

“Being around other chiropractors (many of them friends) and learning new ways to help patients, helps me remember why I love what I do.”

“A few years ago, one of my patients made me a Thank You video. When she came in for her appointments, she secretly asked other patients if they would email her a short video testimonial about me and their experience with chiropractic care. She made all the clips into a long video thanking me for helping her and so many others. I had helped her with neck pain and headaches, but I didn’t fully understand how debilitating her problem was and how much it affected her.”

“To me, this was routine care for a problem I help patients with all the time. Yet she told me that I ‘changed her life.’ It was one of the kindest things anyone has done for me. I realized not to take for granted how much our care helps people. I still watch that video when I am feeling a little down or when I just want to smile.

“Continuing education (CE) is essential! Continuing education gives you the opportunity to learn new ways to help patients as well as new research and practice guidelines. Most of all, CE gives you a chance to socialize with and learn from colleagues. Some of the best information I have ever received has come from speaking to other chiropractors between classes, over dinner, or at the bar during a convention.”

Social events: “Every 2-4 years I go back to Iowa for homecoming at Palmer Chiropractic College to see old classmates. I am also member of my state’s California Chiropractic Association (CalChiro), which has monthly local meetings and larger conventions twice a year. It’s a great way to meet other doctors of chiropractic (DCs). I always feel energized after going to the meetings and seeing other chiropractors. It’s also a great way to get CEs.”

Mentorship: “I have a group of female friends that are also chiropractors. We meet for dinner a few times a year to talk, laugh, and support each other. We named our group The DOCs (Divas of Chiropractic). We have mentored each other for well over 20 years.”

Online Facebook groups: “I am a member of several online chiropractic groups. It is nice to have interactions with other chiropractors on a daily basis.”

Volunteering: “I have always been involved with groups that support the profession. I’ve held several volunteer and elected positions with CalChiro. I served on my state’s licensing board for nine years. I volunteered providing care at a women’s shelter.”

“I also taught an anatomy class through my local county that was part of a larger training class specifically for chiropractic assistants. All of these experiences have allowed me to interact with hundreds of chiropractors.”
