The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) is comprised of two overarching parts – the Privacy Rule and Security Rule. The HIPAA Privacy Rule provides federal protections for personal health information and provides patients with an array of rights with respect to that information. The Privacy Rule balances patients’ rights with permissible disclosure of personal health information necessary for patient care and other important purposes. The Security Rule specifies a series of administrative, physical, and technical safeguards for covered entities to use to assure the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of electronic protected health information. In this class, we will explore the HIPAA rules and regulations and how it affects your office. HIPAA does affect the day-to-day activities of a practice. All groups are required to comply with the HIPAA Privacy regulations and those who store or transmit protected health information electronically are required to comply with the HIPAA Security regulations.
Learning Objectives:
Attendees Will Understand what HIPAA means, how it affects your organization, and significant changes in policies, procedures and processes within the organization in the handling of patient records.

Title: Using Medical Necessity to Make Your Notes More Effective
January 22, 2023 – 11:00am-2:00pm
In this session we will cover how proper case creation allows for doctors to show that patients have moved between phases of care in order to accurately report exactly where a patient is in their care. This process helps doctors to reduce coding problems and risk management issues that are created by the use of continuous wellness care without taking into account the patient’s true condition because the true nature of the condition was not documented correctly.
Dr. Davila graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic and then ran 3 successful practices in South Carolina. Since 2000, Dr. Davila has been training doctors and staff on federal and state insurance compliance as well as working with several chiropractor colleges to improve compliance education. He is considered a foremost expert and has consulted for Axis Healthcare, Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina, American Specialty Health Network, Colonial Life, and others. He also served on the American Chiropractic Association’s Medicare Advisory and Blue Cross Blue Shield Blue CHIP Committees.
